A Day in the Life of an Estate Manager
A Day in the Life of an Estate Manager
Estate management services ensure that an estate operates smoothly. Therefore, each day is filled with numerous responsibilities and challenges. Whether you are considering hiring an Estate Manager for your residence or wish to become one of these professionals, here are some of the many duties of an Estate Manager also sometimes referred to as a House Manager.
Morning
An Estate Manager’s day begins early. After checking and replying to emails, the Estate Manager may review and prioritize that day’s tasks before traveling to their office at the estate for the morning meeting with estate staff, including heads of staff, to confirm that all is as it should be.
While in the office, the House Manager may spend time completing various tasks. They may conduct research into new products, services, or technology that may be cost-effective and beneficial to the estate or its owners.
They may also be found reviewing the estate’s budget and financial reports to see where money can be saved. Calls to businesses and scheduling appointments for the renovation, maintenance, or repair of the structures or grounds of the estate are also part of the morning’s duties.
The morning may end with the Estate Manager meeting with the Principals to update them on the goings-on at the estate and chat about any concerns, and then conduct a walking inspection of the grounds.
Afternoon
During or following their lunch break, the House Manager may check and respond to emails and phone messages received in the morning hours. Afterward, they may meet with service providers to ensure any immediate repair or maintenance needs of the estate are being addressed, and then discuss new or ongoing work with contractors.
Another important aspect of the Estate Manager’s role is to make sure that contractors have what they need to complete their jobs and oversee this work to ensure it is at the level of quality expected by the Principals.
The afternoon can also include calls, emails, or meetings with the Principals to obtain any new information with regard to construction, landscaping, and renovation to pass on to contractors.
Evening
The end of an Estate Manager’s day includes reviews of the progress made by contractors and estate staff to ensure that the day’s goals were met. If any goals are left unmet, it is the house manager’s job to contact contractors or staff to find out why and discuss solutions to prevent this in the future.
A review of the following day’s schedule is another important end-of-day task for an Estate Manager, who will confirm all appointments, add new items, or remove items that were completed early.
Day’s end may also require the Estate Manager to address any issues that may have arisen unexpectedly to ensure everything is operating smoothly prior to leaving the office.
