Hiring a Crew for a Yacht to Meet Your Yacht Staffing Needs

Happy Family with adorable kids resting on yacht

With the COVID-19 crisis, luxury cruise vacations have been canceled. People are tired of staying at home and miss spending time at sea. So, they are making their own family vacation plans by investing in a yacht. A yacht gives them the flexibility and freedom to spend days at sea and visit various beaches and other locations safely from the comfort of their private yacht.

Buying a yacht is just the first part of being able to get away whenever you want. The next step is hiring a crew for a yacht that meets your staffing needs. Don’t fool yourself into thinking you and your current household staff can easily manage your new yacht.

While you may want to bring along your personal assistant or nanny, you still want to hire other yacht staff and crew to take care of the day-to-day operations and management of your yacht. Some of the key positions you’ll want to fill include:

1. Yacht Captain

Even though you might be the captain of your yacht, would you rather spend time navigating the yacht or out on the deck relaxing in the pool or hot tub? Most yacht owners would rather leave most of the navigation and “driving” of the yacht to a trained captain. Depending on the size of your yacht, it can have overly complex and advanced navigation systems, much like cruise ships.

2. Onboard Chef

You’ll also want to hire a chef who not only prepares meals for you, your family, and guests but keeps your crew fed. The chef should have an exceptional palate and be able to prepare a wide range of cuisines to suit your tastes and dietary requirements.

3. Deck Crew

The captain will need a deck crew to help with various tasks and functions for the operation of the yacht. Deck crew members can consist of maintenance personnel, as well, to ensure your yacht is properly cared for whether you are adrift with a misfiring engine or relaxing at home while they scrape barnacles from the hull.

4. Waitstaff and Bartender

You may want to hire waitstaff to take care of your every whim, from filling champagne glasses to getting you a clean towel when you get out of the pool. You will also want a bartender to prepare drinks and beverages and uncork wine. Depending on the size of the yacht and staffing needs, your waitstaff could also perform bartending duties.

5. Housekeepers

You will want someone to make the beds, do laundry, pick up trash, sweep, mop, and do other household-type chores. Your yacht is your home-away-from-home, so it only makes sense to have someone on board to take care of these things.

6. Events Coordinator/Equipment Manager

Some yacht owners hire an event coordinator and equipment manager. This position requires the individual to take care of pool equipment, jet skis, scuba diving equipment, and other such water toys you enjoy while at sea. They are also responsible for ensuring your family and guests are entertained with plenty to do when onboard.

As can be seen, staffing your yacht is something that should not be taken lightly. You want to make sure the people you hire are personable and understand your needs, and that you like them. After all, you will be far from shore with them, and you’ll want people who are respectful to you, your family, and guests, and who get along with each other.
