How to Interview Butlers and Other Staff for Your Home

Choosing the right person to bring into your household is no small task. As they’ll be directly involved in the care and management of your household, you’ll want to hire a butler you can confidently trust and rely on. With a thorough interview process and the right eye, you can pare the candidate pool down and make an informed choice.
Job Interview Questions to Ask and Traits to Watch For
Here at Staffing at Tiffanie’s, we work with clients like you to craft thorough interviews that get you exactly the information you need. Take a look at a few of our suggestions for questions and the kinds of responses you should watch for.
“What Is Your Educational/Professional Background?”
Probably the most common question in any type of interview, this simple query will give you a general idea of the candidate’s academic and work history. What kind of response is most favorable depends on your own preferences.
“Why Do You Feel You’re Suited to This Kind of Work?”
This gives the candidate an opportunity to express not only why they believe they’re good at their job, but why they like doing it. Listen for implicit feelings in responses: “I’m meticulous and reliable” is good, but “I’m meticulous and reliable, and I really enjoy the caretaker role” is even better!
“What Was Your Relationship Like with Your Previous Household?”
It’s a good idea to get a picture of how well things went in the candidate’s last butler or household staffing position. This question also shows how the candidate felt about their last family. Keep an ear out for hesitations and obvious attempts to “sugarcoat” things.
“What Skills Have You Been Learning? What Do You Plan to Learn?”
This question allows you to assess the candidate’s existing skills as well as whether they are interested in continuing to learn. If there’s a skill you want them to have (e.g., cooking or sewing), you might ask how they would feel about learning it.
“How Far Do You See Your Relationship with Our Family Progressing?”
No one wants to hire a butler only to have their career and life plans change suddenly. By asking this question outright, you can get an idea of whether the candidate is prepared to make the kind of time and energy commitments you’re looking for. If you want a long-term butler, an answer like “I plan to stay until I get accepted to law school” is probably a sign they’re not the right choice.
